     July 26,2010:
Gardening, Nature & Weather–slightly skewed
AboutPosted by: gardendaze | July 26,2010 Organic Rose Care: At the beginning of the season, I was offered an organic rose product to trial. I'm always willing to try new organic products because I find a lot of them are very good (and every so often, some are not). But this one, a product called Rose-Buddy, from a company is Issaquah,Washington has turned out to be absolutely fabulous, better than anything I've ever tried and as I'm sure you know, it has not been an easy growing season for anything, least of all roses, which like extra water.
It started off badly last winter, when our house sitter had a guest who, in the process of trying to get up the driveway from hell, repeated ran over one of the bushes. She will be forever infamous as the house sitter who killed an outdoor plant in the winter–or so I thought.
The rose emerged in the spring with the stump of one tiny cane. So I followed the instructions on the Rose-Buddy–1/4 cup per plant, watered in, and went to Texas for the Women’s Final Four. By the time I returned a week later, there were the makings of new canes sprouting. And this is just the beginnings of new growth on the healthy plant today.

My roses endure a lot. Deer eat them, this year they’ve had Japanese beetles, oriental beetles, and of course, several generations of the rose sawfly larva. I also have leaf cutter bees. So my leaves look far from perfect. And I rarely, if ever, give them the supplemental irrigation they crave, even after repeated heat waves. I just don’t baby them. You can see the abuse they endure in this next photo, I think.

You can also see the vibrant new leaves–in the middle of the hottest part of July! That’s just not typical behavior for roses–but the roses are thriving with this product.

And here are some of the blooms, just forming. Again this would not be typical for July
You can see where the beetles have gotten into the buds and chewed away at the edges.
This one, however, is just about perfect.

Next to hydrangeas, roses are probably my favorite flower in the garden so finding this product has just been wonderful. I encourage everyone to give it a try! If you cannot find it locally, it is available at their web site. One gallon has lasted me all growing season (but I live close to the frozen hinterlands of course and only feed April through August!)
